The Clark Memorial Bridge will be closed during overnight hours for the duration of the painting project. In a news release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Tuesday, officials cited safety concerns for drivers and workers as the reason for the closure.
Overnight closures for the Second Street bridge will begin Sunday at 8 p.m. and will reopen by 5 a.m. the next morning.
“Unfortunately, work-zone crashes have continued to rise, with nearly half occurring after the last safety measure was put in place. We’re implementing overnight closures to minimize crashes that may cause life-altering impacts to motorists and crews,” said Matt Bullock, chief district engineer for KYTC’s Louisville office.
The interior lanes will be open — one in each direction — to accommodate daytime traffic.
Officials said during the evenings of home University of Louisville basketball games, one northbound lane will remain open until the majority of traffic has left the arena.
The work on the bridge will pause during winter months and the bridge will reopen during the break. The entire project is expected to be finished in late 2019.
